Introduction: Greg Niehaus, Department Chair, USC

Speaker:  Bob Hartwig, Clinical Associate Professor, Finance Department and Director, Center for Risk and Uncertainty Management

Billions of dollars have financed hundreds of InsurTech start-ups in recent years, but how much of this investment can be considered truly innovative, transformational or disruptive?  Is the insurance industry and its value chain fundamentally threatened by InsurTech?  Are we really building a better mouse trap?  Are today’s students and young practitioners of the art and science of insurance today prepared to lead change from within or will they be displaced by Silicon Valley usurpers?  This presentation will provide insights as to the promise of InsurTech while at the same time suggesting that the immutable laws of statistics and economics—along with the uncertainty of politics and regulation—could act as tempering forces.
